Twirled Circles

One, two, three, or more of these 3-d twirled circle shapes make a vivid and puzzling mobile.

The two types of main pieces required to make the Circles are alike, but one has to be cut open to make the twirl. The two pattern pages include pieces enough to make one circle structure. As you may like to twirl pieces of different colour cut out the pages in two different colours. I used contrasting black and white for my Circles. The six tiny pieces are used to stabilize the shape after twirling.

1. Take three of each piece A (here black and closed) and B (here white and cut open). Observe that although piece A and B are alike piece B shall be rotated 10 deg compared to piece A.

2. Crease and fold along the indicated lines of symmetry. The cut in piece B is NOT coinciding with the line of symmetry. Making the cut in this asymmetrical way makes fixing much simpler later on.

3. Unfold piece A(1) and place the folded piece B(2) as indicated. Use the slit in piece B(2) so that only one end (the shorter) of piece B(2) goes in front of piece A(1).

circle 5

4, Twirl the visible end of piece B(2) around piece A(1) as indicated.

circle 6

5. Turn the first twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled end of piece B(2). Observe that the two ends of piece B(2) meet again.

circle 7

6. Take another folded piece A(3) and place it around the un-twirled end of piece B(2) as indicated. The un-twirled end of piece B(2) goes in between the two layers of piece A(3).

circle 8

7. Twirl the un-twirled end of piece B(2) around piece A(3) as indicated. In the end it meets the other end of piece B(2).

8. Turn the second twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled side of piece A(3).

circle 10

9. Take another folded piece B(4) and place it as indicated. Use the slit in piece B(4) so that only one end (the shorter) of piece B(4) goes in front of piece A(3).

circle 11

10. Twirl the visible end of Piece B(4) around piece A(3) as indicated.

11. Turn the third twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled end of piece B(4).

circle 7

12. Take another folded piece A(5) and place it around the un-twirled end of piece B(4) as indicated. The un-twirled end of piece B(4) goes in between the two layers of piece A(5).

circle 8

13. Twirl the un-twirled end of piece B(4) around piece A(5) as indicated.

circle 9

14. Turn the fourth twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled side of piece A(5).

circle 10

15. Take another folded piece B(6) and place it as indicated. Use the slit in piece B(6) so that only one end of piece B(6) goes in front of piece A(5).

16. Twirl the visible end of piece B(6) around piece A(5) as indicated.

17. Turn the fifth twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled end of piece B(6).

18. Twirl the open end of piece B(6) with the un-twirled section of piece A(1).

19. Now the circle form has six twirled sections, however, the open ends need to be fixed and the project is to get a more firm structure.

20. First fix the six open ends of the B-pieces. Use glue to fix them to the A-pieces where they overlap near the cut in the B-piece.

21. Next use three tiny pieces (same colour as the A pieces) to add together the three twirled sections at the poles of the circle form. Fix half of the small piece to one section and the other half to the next. A pair of tweezers will be helpful.

22. Use the other three tiny pieces (same colour) to fix the three sections near the other pole of the circle structure in a similar way.

23. Unfold and distribute the six twirled “half circles” evenly around the center.

24. Add a piece of string at the top center to hang the project.

Mobile 2           Mobile 3           Mobile 5

Make a mobile attaching circle structures to either end of a piece of piano wire. To make the circle structures stay on the wire use round-nose pliers to make small eyes at the ends of the wire. Hang the assembly from a piece of string attached to the mid-point of the wires.
